I'm doing some research for my young adult literature paper and found a site that lists the most challenged books of 2000. The Harry Potter series was number one for satanism/occult and anti family.. WTF do people even read the books before they start bitching about them?

A lot of them don't. A lot of them hear about the evils of a book in their church and don't question it any further. When I was a census enumerator one year (back in 1980), one of the places I had to interview was a Baptist church. The pastor's wife was having a church ladies meeting, so she asked if I could wait whilst they finished. I sat for nearly half an hour listening to her telling this group of maybe 20 ladies all the books they should never let their children read and what music they should never allow in their house. Among the books she mentioned were Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn, Are You There God It's Me Margaret and "anything Star Trek or science fiction, especially not Robert Heinlein or Ray Bradbury". Among the music: the Beatles. She claimed her husband had listened to the Beatles "When I'm 64" backwards and heard demonic sounds. They were planning a book-burning and record-smashing party for the following week after the ladies all snooped through their kids rooms and confiscated any "contraband".
